Day 6: Padron to Santiago de Compostela (15.8 mi)

Ok, we did it. Yes completed it officially and even have the paperwork to prove our distance. Today went by faster than anticipated – maybe a case of “get there-itis” but we made it nonetheless. The city is very large compared to the other towns we have been in – so that’s a bit different. Tomorrow we will check out the church and do a tourist day before taking the bus back to Porto for our 6 am flight on Saturday morning. Today actually turned out to be great weather for this long walk – last week it was 80F, today 68F(ish), would be sort of sunny, then a quick drizzle of rain – grab your coat and cover the pack, keep walking, then sun again, take off your coat, etc. and back and forth almost all day – but gives you something to do!

The trail is a very slow incline almost all the way, so we were both pretty tired when we got here. Cindy has come down with a stomach bug – and I know the specific meal & place where she got it. Hopefully it will be a 24 hour type of thing…

Lots of animals and grapes and small farms along the way with more and more people as well. Since we are on the main route you get all sorts of folks from all across Europe and the USA and a couple of Canadians as well. Everyone we have met has been super nice and helpful and this is a really easy trip to navigate. I asked Cindy if I should post a picture of my foot now with it’s mole-skin wrap, etc. and she said no – so we’ll leave that to your imagination.

Not really much to say except that this was a great trip, lots and lots of walking which is also great for thinking about everything you could possibly want to think about. I found myself today thinking about Monty Python and the Holy Grail and doing the “horse clapping” thing while going down the cobblestone path. Of course I got the “you’re in seventh grade” look from you know who, but I laughed and it was fun. Then I saw three folks in their parkas, which all matched in green and as we walked by I said “We are the knights who say Ni” – unfortunately I think they were Dutch or German and looked at me funny – so I had another laugh and kept walking.

I’m sure if I tried hard enough I would find another who would join me on my holy quest for the grail… wait – the reason you walk the Camino is that it is a holy quest – one that pilgrims would walk for centuries. So maybe I’ve now done a real holy quest as well!

And with that I’ll upload some photos and call it a night! Unless I can find some African Swallows…

Dog just waiting.
Less than 10K to go!
Grand-Dad Goat!
Grapes hanging.
Monty Python happened here.
Walking towards our main destination – almost there!
Mile Marker “0” the final stop.
