Salzburg Austria, Rainy Day #1

Well we successfully mastered taking a one way train to Salzburg, although when we arrived at the train itself we found out that our reserved seats were no longer physically on the train – so ended up moving to the economy section – Hayden found a 1st class seat though. It’s a 1.5 hour train ride from Munich to Salzburg, so pretty simple to get here.

Now I would say I benefit from growing up in the Pacific Northwest- largely rain doesn’t really bother me and raining here all day it was…. So we put our raincoats and gathered our umbrella’s and did a discover Salzburg afternoon at the castle. This castle started in about 300 AD and over the years the various leaders (church mostly) have added to the scope and size of the castle/fort. Inside was a museum (so out of the rain) and that was an interesting tour. They seem to focus a lot on WWI and not necessarily WWII. Salzburg and this area of Austria was essentially the edge of the front during WWI, so basically celebrated. WWII the Nazi’s sort of strolled right in with everyone greeting them with open arms – so maybe not the best storytelling.

We spent the day walking around the castle, and ending with a late dinner. Today we are touring Mozart’s birth place and house, followed by Cindy taking us on a “sound of music tour”. The sing along part started this morning with “the goat song”.
