Salzburg: Cooking, Walking, Eagle’s Nesting…

Well the last two days have been pretty fun in and around Salzburg – with mostly rain and cold but occasionally the sun would emerge and offer a glimpse of a warmer place. Cindy coordinated a great cooking class, where we made strudel and pretzel’s – which of course was the best pretzel I’ve ever had.

Yesterday we played 100% tourist – including taking the fun bus ride with 56 other tourists aboard to the Eagle’s Nest – a local Nazi / Hitler hot spot. Built on the top of a mountain (why I have no idea) – it’s a 6km winding road to a tunnel and then to a 450 foot elevator ride up to the actual building.

The view is outstanding, but again I was thinking “why build this…”. It was built by the Nazi party and Hitler really didn’t make many trips here – but used to entertain other heads of state. Maybe it was more in line with look what we could build & do. While it’s a bit romanced for my taste, they sort of gloss over that it was built in 13 months – road, tunnel, elevator shaft included – by people who came from concentration camps. Note that this was in the late 30’s so mostly political prisoners – but people who suffered a great deal nonetheless. In the snow/ice with nothing really to wear – they were worked basically until they couldn’t.

Let’s see what else – we did a Sound of Music walking tour in the city, which actually was very fun and took us on about a 5 mile walk – with some truly amazing views. I have the “goat/puppet” song going constantly through my head now. Follow along with me here: (https://youtu.be/UmmOJx_Hxto?si=TgntnwAF7R09uj8p). We also saw Mozart’s house and birthplace – which was interesting for sure.

So mostly some images – we took lots of photos, so continue to fill the cloud.
