Interlaken: Top of the World, James Bond & Tourist Fun

Ok, yesterday was a bit crazy, we were in the wave of tourists that have arrived since Thursday was a bank holiday and the weather has turned nice (75-80F) – so yesterday we spent the day hiking, training, busing, ski cable car riding to the top and back down. It’s pretty crazy destination as it was the featured spot in James Bond: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – and the building at the top is where we ended up.

Well the journey starts in town and you take a 20 minute train ride into more of the mountain area. Basically the ‘base camp’ of all the mountain oriented activities. These areas are also ski areas – which is crazy to think about as a lot of the cliffs if you went off are a couple of thousand feet down so stay in bounds for sure. We were able to take the bus to the base and then you perform the magic squeeze game of how many people can you get into a cable car to then be launched up the mountain. Cindy especially likes this game as being shoulder to shoulder (or is it shoulder to arm pit?) of your newest tourist friend is a lot of fun.

At the top it’s a great view of the mountain peaks around you – mostly about 11-13,000 feet – but the rocks are something to look at for sure. It snowed two weeks prior and Wednesday when we got here it was raining pretty hard so everything is green and spectacular.

We were able to get back down after having one train break down, but that’s ok, just double up the number of people and get em jammed into the car – again Cindy’s favorite game. After the bus/train down we were pretty spent, so walked to dinner which was a great fondue place at a local hostel. The best way to get around here is simply walking around – you really don’t even see taxi’s here, and Uber I haven’t even checked. Having the URail pass has been super helpful as it’s paid for both our train travel and boat travel on the lakes.

That’s really about it: tomorrow paragliding…
