Well Made it Home – 21 Hours of flying

So I decided that the best flight option coming home was a 3 a.m. departure from Bangalore to Denver – via Frankfurt. Was it convenient, yes, was I really tired, for sure. Was able to have dinner with Ashley at our hotel, then shower, pack and leave for the airport around 11 pm. By the time I got into my seat and settled it was about 2:45, and I remember taxiing back from the gate… woke up at about hour 6 of an 8 hour flight, so that was pretty great.

So the last day was pretty busy for us, doing work things – we had three different meetings, each were about 10-15km distance – which takes about an hour of driving between meetings. We had a very nice driver (Yoga) and he did a great job. The meeting atmosphere is very casual and relaxed. We did have our last meeting in a new building which felt exactly like being in San Fran or Denver – modern and a coffee shop in the lobby. Not sure what upstairs is like, but the lobby was excellent – mostly the coffee was good and I needed it at 4 in the afternoon.

Generally the last part was about eating food. One of our partners we met with just opened a restaurant so we went there – it was very good and the service was as well. I think they are learning about what works with their food menu, but everything we had was very good. What’s interesting is that we had a meeting in their building and they have a kitchen (and staff) that cooks three meals a day for their team members (100+). I think for the most part it’s too hard to go out and find something, so keeping people there makes a ton of sense. We met with a guy that commutes basically five hours per day – two in the a.m. and three in the p.m. to his house. Sort of crazy to spend that much time in the car. He did mention that he gets in about two or three arguments with other drivers per day so maybe that’s a stress reliver?

Made it to Frankfurt without issue, had a pretty quick layover and then a 10 hour flight back to Denver on Saturday. I’m writing this on Monday and the JetLag is pretty settled and seem to have my systems figured out to minimize it. Essentially make sure you get a good night sleep where you are going with Melatonin, and then get up at the normal time and find sunshine if possible. I also have been using the 5 hour energy drinks when doing these trips and for the first 48 hours they seem to help a lot. They are not sugar based, so it’s really caffeine and vitamin B that’s getting you going. I haven’t used those back here, but have been forcing sleep at a normal time using melatonin. Seems to work, so I’m sticking with it. The best thing I’ve found is the Garmin Jet Lag Advisor with my watch, you put in days/times of travel and it basically coaches you on what to do – seems to really work and help.

Ok “special section” as I forgot to talk about our hotel. (Oberoi) This is a five star hotel, they have various ones around the world. All I can say is that on a scale of 1..10, this is a 10. The service was spectacular, food excellent, breakfast even better, and my room was very nice. I went down Thursday morning and ran on the treadmill for about 40 minutes, when done went outside to sit by the pool and cool off. A friendly guy shows up about 5 minutes after sitting down with a small mango lassi, cool towels and two small bottles of water. I was pretty excited about the mango lassi, of course texted Ashley to come down and see the surprise at the pool. She just finished a yoga class so it was well received. Will I be back? Probably.

Well that’s it for the Indian / Singapore round the world adventure in 9 days. Next up is Lisbon + Morocco in October. Cindy has to go visit Africa – possibly in November – or October and I’m trying to determine if I can tag along – there’s a lot happening with work, so not sure that’s possible. Thanks for reading.
