Day 1: Baiona to Vigo (16.5 Miles)

Well yesterday we left Porto and took a taxi about 2 hours north to Baiona Spain to begin our walk. Very nice drive, reminds me of driving the Oregon coast a bit – not much traffic and very scenic. Once we arrived in Baiona we inspected our hotel for proper “air flow” or air that flows across the bed so Cindy can sleep at night. Unfortunately we’re now in the land of the bed made out of rocks and little to no airflow – so we countered the lack of airflow with red wine at dinner. At this point, starting your day eating fresh cheese and then having the cheese plate, bread and olives at dinner is really becoming taxing. We both said after this a.m. breakfast – “probably will skip cheese tonight…” so we’ve probably over done that part of the trip so far.

Ok. Today we walked, and after 16 miles I’m pretty sore. It’s an interesting walk/hike – for the most part very flat – but you’re also walking on the rock sidewalk – and my heel definitely feels like it. This part of the Spanish coast is very nice – almost “San Diego-ish” from say 50 years ago. Lots of great beaches with a sailing club out in the bay today doing races. We saw some kids doing surf lessons which was also pretty fun. The first 12 miles of the walk is along the beach, the last 4 has you going through town which is pretty industrial. For the most part navigating is easy – you look for little yellow arrows on street lamps, etc. or in our case double check with All Trails navigation which took us almost path by path here.

The people walking by are pretty nice – some saying “good Camino (in Spanish)” to us or simply “hi” as we were walking by. We’re now in the city of Vigo which is industrial – there was a cruise ship here when we were walking in. Our bags made it (via courier) so not having to lug a bunch of stuff is nice. Tomorrow we only have to do about 13km (3 hours) – but some good elevation gain with it, so that should be pretty easy and done by noon-ish.

That’s really about it, bunch of pictures to highlight the walk and hotel yesterday, and the fact that Baiona is where one of Christopher Columbus ships came back to, while CC when to Lisbon – so they have a mockup of the Pinta here.

The picture of Cindy holding up her hands is that she doesn’t want to get her shoes wet, so finally figured out she could take her shoes off to walk across the water – great success!
