Day 2: Raining our Way from Vigo to Redondela (11 mi)

Portugal / Travelling

Well today was actually pretty great, rained pretty hard our last hour or two, but this morning we left around 9 am and it was nice until about noon – but we finally got to use our rain gear and it worked great— having grown up in the Pacific Northwest I didn’t have any worries about our rain gear decisions 🙂

Last night was sort of yuck in our hotel. Trying to sleep, but couldn’t figure out how to establish “air flow” for Cindy – so in the middle of the night windows were opened and all was well. Until… the mosquito (yes singular “1” mosquito) decided that I would be his/her feast for the evening. Waking up to that “zzzzz” sound in your ear, thinking you were successful in your attempt to grab them mid-air at night when you cannot see, then five minutes later the “zzzzz” sound returning and on and on and on it went. Finally, this microscopic insect either had its way with me, or I was successful in my grasps for nothing – either way it stopped at some point and we were both able to get some sleep. (Not much mind you).

Today was pretty simple and I’m glad it was our feet were both a bit sore from yesterday. You leave the hotel – after of course being offered meat, cheese, danishes, coffee, OJ, and the rest for breakfast. Last night we found a great Italian restaurant and had a salad and pasta and it was wonderful – so not very hungry this a.m. But of course I had to oblige our hotel and wouldn’t want them to feel bad about their breakfast – so meat, cheese, yogurt, and two coffees later I was ready to go.

The hike here was pretty easy, you have to leave town by walking up hill for about 2 miles then you get onto an elevated path that simply winds around the mountain and eventually head down a steep road to Redondela. There were actually lots of people doing the same hike today. Most folks simply say “hi” or “good Camino” and keep walking along. Now that we’re professionals at this we fit right in.

This afternoon it started to rain, hard at times, then would stop, then start and now it’s sort of kept going all afternoon. Because the lodging in Redondela was sold out our tour provider arranged for us to stay at the same hotel that we did last night – so we simply took a taxi back to the hotel when done walking. Let’s see 4 hours of walking, 15 min taxi ride back…

We had a great lunch at a place next door – not much is open since it’s Sunday – Tuna Tartare and two beef tacos – the food here in Vigo is very good and recommended. On our way back today I found the two American influences: KFC and Burger King – ugh – if this what we’ve offered to the cuisine of the world it’s scary.

Tomorrow the taxi comes back and we drive to where we stopped today and then do a longer hike that spans two hills – should be fairly easy and take five or six hours. I think we’ll go find some ice cream.
