My first week in Pucon, Chille

Uncategorized

Deja vu is all I can manage to say. I’m sitting in a chair overlooking  the lake that my parents were looking at 15 years ago. They say it has grown, and I believe them. It sorta reminds me of Aspen, CO with a mix of Cour De Lane, Idaho. Sitting on a piece of land between a dormant volcano and Lake Villarica is sorta unnerving knowing that the volcano is still bubbling and rising every time […]

Hot Springs, Getting our Hiking Merit Badge, Trying to Cook Food

So yesterday we went to a local hot springs to hang out and soak our bodies in the luke warm water.  Gavin decided that it would be fun to swim around all the people – who were all stationary in the hot springs – oh well “tourista’s”.  The hot springs were about a 40 minute drive away so we spent the afternoon there and came back later than expected.  In Chile they sell “carbon” for […]

Chile / Travelling / Uncategorized

So we are now in Pucon, having driven from Las Cruces to Pucon.  We needed a place to stay and the 1/2 way point is a spot in Chillán – so we went about finding a place to stay.  I wasn’t really paying attention when Cindy was making the reservation(s) – we usually trust each other – and she’s great about finding places to stay.  All I heard was “I booked a place with a picture […]

Where We are – in the USA – huh?

So it’s been cold – in the 68-72F range – at the beach – which largely we were expecting to be hotter.  It’s not humid at all – very comfortable.  We’ve been wearing sweatshirts and shorts – it’s nice but not 100% of what we were thinking.  When we were walking yesterday I asked everyone – hey – if we were in the US where do you think we would be?  Answers were San Francisco, Maryland […]

Well I wanted to get some photos off the Nikon camera to share as well and figured a quick post might help.  We went for a walk to the beach last night as it was one of the best evenings we have had (no cloud cover and warmer).  Now that we are here on a Tuesday things are much quieter than on the weekend.  Gavin is highly interested in the ships at sea – Hayden […]

Day 9: Home Schooling & and the Crazy Garbage Cleaning Boxer

Day 9 – yikes can’t believe we are at day 9 already.  If you were on a two week vacation you’d already be slipping back into re-entry mode probably – at least that’s how it seems to work with us when we travel.  We continue to work with the kids on their schoolwork.  We’ve found using Kahn Academy also helps as the boys get to watch videos and take tests in their subject area then […]

From Skyscrapers to Farms

Uncategorized

The dirt road that we took here gave me a vague idea of the town we were going to. Run down, not maintained, little to no population…I was wrong…. From Vina Del Mar, skyscrapers and fancy buildings to Las Cruces, small, one story houses and rural buildings. A big change from city life to country life. Once your settled in though, it feels like home. Family run businesses, typical families, and all the little side […]

The Car Arrives & Onward to Las Cruces

Well I got to spend the day dealing with the car – and all is well – but it was a very long day & night.  Guys in the street outside the hostel were playing drums until about 1:30 a.m. – the single drummer dudes from the last post.  The car  traveled from the US (Houston) through the Panama Canal – and into Valpariso Chile in 26 days.  What’s amazing is that seemingly everything is still done […]

The Beach, The Feather Crazy Dog & the Boys

Yesterday and today we had a couple of very nice beach days, although today was colder – cloudy and a bit windy.  We’re getting more and more comfortable with communicating and doing ok in our spanglish.  We are also getting onto a more traditional schedule here – dinner 9 pm (if we eat one), European style breakfast (9 a.m) and lunch.  I’ve been waking the boys up at 9 for breakfast, then doing school until […]

The wonders of Vina Del Mar

Vina Del Mar! The wonder of it all. It seems like a South American San Francisco. With all the ships in the cove and all the steep hillside streets, I’m reminded of California. The thing is, from my perspective, the three cities that are sharing the cove, Valparaiso, Vina Del Mar, and Colcon,  since they’re so close to each other it seems bigger than Santiago, although it’s not… a shame. Beaches that are packed from […]
