We’re in San Francisco! I knew this felt like California

So the entire trip from Vina Del Mar driving down here I kept telling Cindy and the boys that this is just like California – only about 75 years ago (or more).  The landscape, the fruits & farms, the type of trees, etc. all reminds me of California.  The weather in Pucon is amazingly good – even locals have said they are surprised at how nice it has been – they usually have some rainy days, etc.  We met a guy from the states who is a blue berry farmer here (going to see his farm later) – but you also see lots of berries, etc.  Last year they did get 110 inches of rain here last year – so that gives you a good perspective on how it changes.  It might be closer to Seattle on the rain scale – although 110 is a lot.

So mapped out are a couple of things.  First is our location in South America (Pucon) – then this plotted north, but adjusted to the west coast – see it’s exactly in San Francisco!  The next thing I did is took the tip of south america and plotted that against where that would be in the Northern Hemisphere – it’s amazing …. we’re not even really getting to Alaska – but it’s the tip of South America.   Makes you think about all the people living in Alaska and what extreme conditions they live under.

It’s a short post, but helps me (and probably you) understand where we are in relation to the Northern side of the world.

The Monastery on the hill, How Chile Reduces Smoking, and 10 Mile Hike Number Two of Five

The Monastery on the Hill, and Smoking

So two days ago, we went to this really cool monastery up on the hill. From the city, all you can see is part of the building. From the monastery, however, you can see just about all of Pucon. The road up was quite nice, made of cobblestone. After three switchbacks, we finally made the parking lot, just outside of it, which is actually quite small. We walked through the archway to the service area, and we found they usually do it outside. The outdoor area is made of a two by six area of pews. Inside, was just as big, but they had the alter, the cross, and these really nice statues on John the Baptist, Joseph the Carpenter, Mary, Joseph’s wife, and there is one more that I don’t know the name of, but it is still really nice. Behind the outdoor worshiping area, there was a little overlook with a staircase. If you were to go down the staircase, which I did, you would come out right next to the caretakers cabin, which is really small, but down at the bottom of the drive up. That surprised me because the staircase is actually quite short.

When my mom and I were walking up the stairs, she found this old smoking box, which was empty of course. In my opinion, the Chilean government does a better job reducing smoking then the USA does. It is not”General Surgon says smoking is bad”  The images we saw on the box can say why.

Fun BBQ in Pucon

The local BBQ and Ribs/Sausage we ate later. Just like Scout Camp right?

We were invited by our hosts in Pucon to attend a local BBQ for an American who has lived in Pucon and is returning back to the states for awhile.  It was a fun experience – both in the place it was held, the people we met and the things we were able to experience.   The man who is moving back to the states is a huge supporter of the street dog movement here in Pucon – and he gave a very moving speech about people supporting street dogs.  You see, rich people from Santiago come here during the summer, hang out and play.  They also might grab a puppy from the street for their kids to play with – aw how cute… The problem is that upon leaving back to Santiago, almost all these dogs are left here in Pucon at a spot on the way out of town.  It’s a shame because dogs here are not like our dogs in the states – here as a dog you live on the street, or outside 100% of the time – even if you have an owner.  Chilean’s don’t really believe in spay/neuter as well – so you get all these dogs out on the streets at night – and lots of puppies follow…  He gave a very moving speech which hopefully will get people to support what he cares about.

Black Beach, White Beach, Sailing, Buying Local Queso, the Blue Lake and of course a Dessert

It’s been hotter than earlier in the week so going to the beach was definitely in order.  The other day we went to black beach – at first we were walking along and not seeing anyone – then we turned the corner and yikes – lots of people.  We carefully carved out our 8′ x 8′ spot with our towels, the umbrella guy came over and put up an umbrella for us and we were in business.  The sand is black – basically small ground rock – very rough, not fine like sand at the beach.  We all swam and hung out and had some fun.  The boys have been bugging me to go sailing – but every time we go it’s blowing 25 kots of wind and not a good place to let them sail.  But the other day the wind died down and we went out – it turned out to be a great 10+ knot wind – easily making way and not heeling over too far.  We spent a magical hour sailing and got done around 8:30 when the sun was starting to orange against the volcano – very cool indeed.   Chilean’s have now found speed boats, jet-ski’s and other power toys so the lake has lots of things zipping about, as well as wind surfers, parachutes, para-gliders and more.  Since it’s high season – everything is going – and every means to make a buck in the sun is being offered.  We aren’t really “Miami Vice/Beach Goers” so we were glad when we found a different beach today.

My first week in Pucon, Chille

Deja vu is all I can manage to say. I’m sitting in a chair overlooking  the lake that my parents were looking at 15 years ago. They say it has grown, and I believe them. It sorta reminds me of Aspen, CO with a mix of Cour De Lane, Idaho. Sitting on a piece of land between a dormant volcano and Lake Villarica is sorta unnerving knowing that the volcano is still bubbling and rising every time I see steam rise after a chunk of snow hits molten rock. They have some beaches around the lake with sand, but guess what? The sand is actually black ash from the eruptions of Volcano Villarica. Every morning, I wake to the sound of Sheep, South American Chicken Hawks, Cows, and Horses.  After all, we are living on a farm sort of plot of land. Our typical schedule goes like this.

Hot Springs, Getting our Hiking Merit Badge, Trying to Cook Food

So yesterday we went to a local hot springs to hang out and soak our bodies in the luke warm water.  Gavin decided that it would be fun to swim around all the people – who were all stationary in the hot springs – oh well “tourista’s”.  The hot springs were about a 40 minute drive away so we spent the afternoon there and came back later than expected.  In Chile they sell “carbon” for charcoal – it’s not charcoal but basically pre-burned wood that you get going again.  I decided that our gourmet evening would be rice, marinated chicken and some pico-de-gallo that Hayden had made.   In my mistake, when I was at the store I purchased the largest chicken breasts I’ve seen in a long time (even bigger than Costco) – I was actually thinking, “Did I get turkey by mistake?”.  Anyway – I started the grill – hoping it would be shorter than the place in Las Cruces (1.5 hours) to cook our food.  Well let me tell you at 1.5 hours I was staring at some semi-raw chicken – so I covered in foil and 2 hours later we had dinner.  Cindy doesn’t think we were quite at 180F for the internal temperature – but well that’s ok.  She was in charge of the rice on the stove – we’re not used to making rice on the stove – we have a rice cooker… about 20 minutes after the rice had started I’m smelling this burning smell in the house – yikes – well let’s say our rice had a nice smoky flavor.  Ever seen the movie BirdCage with Robin Williams?  There’s a great scene in there where their chef/house boy brings out his soup and everyone takes a bite – then immediately everyone goes for the bread on the table – if I put bread on the table… you get the idea.

First Couple of Days in Pucon…

Chile

Well we have spent the last three days here in Pucon getting re-established.  Pucon has grown a great deal since we were here 15 years ago – now you have “super-mercado” markets (3), seemingly many more places to stay and even some medium condo-esque style buildings appearing.  It was sort of sad to walk into the super-mercado which felt like King Soopers down the road – everything is packaged food, etc.  The nice thing is that there are lots of things to choose from – the bad thing is that the 1:1 personal interaction that you have in places like Las Cruces isn’t there.  We’ve found other local smaller spots though – so we can keep confusing the locals with our ‘habla’.  We went to the beach today for about 10 minutes to check it out – it was very, very crowded – think Brazil.  Tomorrow we might brave the beach.   These pictures are from our place that we are staying in Pucon.  The owners are from Whidbey Island, WA and spend 6 months here and out of the rain of the Pacific NW.

Rural Turismo Los Vilches – “honey I got a room with a goat!”

Chile / Travelling / Uncategorized

So we are now in Pucon, having driven from Las Cruces to Pucon.  We needed a place to stay and the 1/2 way point is a spot in Chillán – so we went about finding a place to stay.  I wasn’t really paying attention when Cindy was making the reservation(s) – we usually trust each other – and she’s great about finding places to stay.  All I heard was “I booked a place with a picture of a Goat…” – ok… So we found our spot – after driving 6 hours through Route of the Fruits (Ruta del Fruta).  There was fresh fruit everywhere – honestly we stopped and bought a 2 lb package of strawberries – the best I’ve had in my life  – which we promptly ate about 1/2 in the car.  The quality of the fruits and vegetables has been unbelievable – especially if you are gettting local.  We had a watermelon in Las Cruces that was great.  Ok, back to Los Vilches…

Where We are – in the USA – huh?

Uncategorized

So it’s been cold – in the 68-72F range – at the beach – which largely we were expecting to be hotter.  It’s not humid at all – very comfortable.  We’ve been wearing sweatshirts and shorts – it’s nice but not 100% of what we were thinking.  When we were walking yesterday I asked everyone – hey – if we were in the US where do you think we would be?  Answers were San Francisco, Maryland (Cindy), Oregon (me), etc.    When Gavin was on Skype with his class they wanted to know where he was – it’s hard to explain.  it’s also hard to visualize why we are 4 hours ahead of Colorado, etc.

So here ya go – the red pin in the map is our coordinates if we were in the Northern Hemisphere vs Southern.  You can see the ‘blue dot’ in Chile – that’s us.   It looks like we are about the same Latitude as South/North Carolina Border.  Having been in South Carolina in the summer I can tell you that this is not South Carolina – much cooler, no humidity, etc.  Anyway this will give you a greater sense of where we are…  What’s interesting is that I want to map the tip of south america to see where it is against North America – doesn’t seem like it would be close to Alaska even – given our coordinates.

Well I wanted to get some photos off the Nikon camera to share as well and figured a quick post might help.  We went for a walk to the beach last night as it was one of the best evenings we have had (no cloud cover and warmer).  Now that we are here on a Tuesday things are much quieter than on the weekend.  Gavin is highly interested in the ships at sea – Hayden was more interested in using the camera and some of these photos are his.  Got my chicken out this a.m. for fajitas and prepped it for marinade.  In the store you literally goto the meat counter and ask for a chicken – they have whole chickens and just the breasts or the thigh/leg connnected together.  When you get home you get to cut up the chicken and prep it.  Food seems to take much longer to prepare and cook – but it is all made from scratch and I like to cook so there you go…  The pictures of the food are from our first night of BBQing pork.  Hayden made the pico sauce – tomatoes, red-onion, cucumber, fresh lemon, cilantro, olive-oil and sea-salt – it was very tasty on top of our grilled pork.  There is a brown building here – it’s part of the university research branch – pretty interesting.    Here are some photos of what’s been happening… and we are going to make some lunch, goto the store and maybe the beach…
